Sugar Continued

Hidden Sugars in things we like to eat.

Reading food labels to determine sugar content is pretty interesting.  Since most labels use grams,  an easy rule of thumb is 1 tsp = 4 grams.  So the guidelines in grams are:

women – 26 grams daily, and men – 38 grams daily.

So I perused the aisles of our local Safeway, and here are a few items and their sugar content per serving:

Instant Quaker maple and brown sugar oatmeal – 12 grams

Yoplait original yogurt – 26 grams

Chobani blackberry yogurt – 15 grams

Chobani strawberry yogurt – 7 grams

Oreo cookies (3 cookies = 1 serving) – 14 grams

Brianna’s blush vinaigrette (2 T) – 14 grams

Breyers French vanilla ice cream (1/2 cup) – 14  grams

Haagen Dazs chocolate chocolate chip ice cream – 22 grams

Some of those numbers are startling:  one container of Yoplait yogurt contains the entire daily sugar quota for women.

It really behooves us to read labels to inform our food choices.  Even when we think we’re eating healthy we could be sorely mistaken.
